| Aspect | OSI Model | TCP/IP Model |
|---|---|---|
| Purpose | A theoretical, vendor-neutral reference | Describes protocols actually in use |
| Layers | 7, strictly separated | 4, some OSI layers merged together |
| Developed by | ISO, as a general standard | DARPA/US Department of Defense, for a working network |
| Real-world adoption | Used as a teaching and troubleshooting reference | Directly implemented in real operating systems |
Why Both Models Are Still Taught
OSI provides the precise vocabulary ("this is a Layer 2 problem") used across the networking industry, while TCP/IP describes what's actually running on every device connected to the internet. Understanding both means being able to reason about networking problems academically and diagnose them practically.
